On Girls Geeking It Up Over Dinner & Drinks, Jozi Style.

Want gorgeous views of the Jozi skyline? Feel the need to see the sunset over our amazing city of gold? Want delicious food, plentiful booze and excellent service? The place you’re looking for is Higher Ground Restaurant.

The occasion? A bunch of smart, gorgeous and loud women getting together to drink, laugh, chat, network and make as much noise as possible at the Girl Geek Dinner. The concept? Providing a space for women to communicate/engage/network with other women with similar geek-ish tendencies, without the interferenceย  of testosterone. That’s not to say men aren’t welcome at these events – they are, if invited by a female. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Geek Girls Dinner last night was a fantastic opportunity to do many things. Including:

  • Drink tequila. (Thanks, Romy! Even though you weren’t there, you totally rocked my evening.)
  • Meet lots of new faces – I haven’t been to a networking event in over a year. It’s surprising how quickly the faces change in that time. It’s also awesome.
  • Catch up with online friends, offline. Gossip. Enthusiastically.
  • Stock up on wet wipes. Oh, sorry. Facial wipes. Thanks, Sarah, for those. As a mother, one can never have too many wet wipes.ย  ๐Ÿ˜‰
  • Marvel at the spectacular eyegasm that is the Jozi skyline at night, and the magnificent city that we live in.
  • Be astounded by how loud a bunch of women can really get. It’s been a long time since I was in a room filled with that many girls – I think the last time was high school. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  • Listen to some really interesting people talk about some really interesting stuff. Lana Strydom from FNB (she’s the head of marketing and digital media) getting into the nitty-gritty of how/why FNB is really bangin’ in the social media space right now. (Hello, RBJacobs – you rock!) Her message for businesses using social media spaces, faces and places – take what you’re doing every single day in your business, and make it social. Simple, wise words. Tiana Cline from Girl Guides, on girls and gaming. Now I don’t know much about gaming (I far prefer reading books) all I do know is that my Kid rocks Angry Birds – getting 3 stars on most levels. He’s completely addicted. Think a girl child would be the same? You betcha.
  • Discover a whole lot of new people to follow on Twitter – seriously –ย  the #girlgeekjhb hashtag was out of control last night – I think at one point it was trending in Johannesburg, which is kinda cool. (I will, at this point, admit to having used several versions of the hashtag, but then….I’ll blame that on the tequila.)

In short, it was a marvelous excuse to get out of the house on a Tuesday night and relax. Hair down, volume up, tequila down and chill out. Well worth the effort of making 15 litres of Body Thrills Detox Smoothie Mask For Your Face, to go into the GGDJHB fabulous goodie bags.

Many thanks to the gorgeous organisers – Belinda and Leigh – and the ridiculously rad venue! xx
