On The Long Weekend – It Was Blissful

Three day weekends. Not as long as they could be, but longer than they should be.

This weekend was long enough to look at another squillion houses. None of which tickled our fancy even a little bit. There’s a house for sale on the same road as my dream house, and I was semi-smitten with it – but not The Fiance. Sigh. So we’re still looking. Can we take a moment to appreciate the beauty of my dream house? The Fiance says he’d never live here, but I think it’s beyond amazing.

This weekend was long enough for waffles and ice cream at Milky Lane with my boys. There’s really something to be said for Milky Lane ice cream – ain’t nothing else like it.

This weekend was long enough to watch plenty of episodes of Shameless – the US version. The Fiance got to play Darksiders 2 to his heart’s content, and The Kid played Ben 10 Cosmic Destruction until his eyeballs went square-ish.

Don’t fret, this weekend was also long enough for us to spend some time outdoors. We took the sausage dog and a soccer ball to the park. Horwood’s Farm is a favourite hangout of ours. It’s huge. There are bike/walking paths. Shady trees. A huge playground.

We’ve been there a fair amount recently, but I’d never really paid attention to the fact that there is an abandoned tea garden/restaurant and a farm house on the property as well. Yesterday, while walking the dog I decided to do a bit of exploring – something I couldn’t do most other times we went to Horwoods, because I never wanted to leave The Kid unattended on the playground.

So I took a closer look at the farm house.

Which turned out to be the original farm house built around the turn of the last century. It’s the oldest building in Edenvale, too.

It’s now completely abandoned, filthy and most of the windows are broken. But man, it was stunning. I fell in love with the blue and white dutch tiles everywhere.

Horwood’s Farm is also right next door to my favourite boneyard. A good, quiet place to think and retreat to, when you need a time-out.

Regardless of whether you call it Heritage Day or Braai Day, the weekend was long enough to appreciate both. We had a braai at The Fiance’s parents house, with his family. The Kid enjoyed his first swim of the warmer season, too.

We took the time to appreciate all the things that we enjoy about South Africa. Mostly food-related, as it so happened:

Things like green Creme Soda.

And Ouma, Mrs Balls, Ultra Mel, Jungle Oats and Knorrox.

And let’s not forget these:

The weekend was also long enough to hit The Good Food & Wine Show. Which was somewhat of a bun-fight. Soooo many people – it was just mayhem. Luckily we found the Original Iced Cocktails stand pretty quickly. They plied us with Yard-Long glasses filled with delicious frozen cocktails and sent us off with a goodie bag.

I’ve long been a fan of these frozen cocktails. They came with us three years ago on a roadtrip to the coast. They’ve been at just about every braai/party we’ve been to. These cocktails are like Slush Puppies – only better. They’re boozy and barely taste like it. Have you tried them yet? You can also check them out on Facebook and Twitter.

So how was your long weekend? Not long enough?

I LURV those cocktails! I like to make the bags all squishy and stick a straw in them so I don’t even have to bother with a glass!
