You know you’re an adult when you start planning DIY projects with your other half. When the prospect of picking out paint colours excites you more than the thought of putting on your heels, getting ratfaced and dancing all night with your girlfriends and waking up with a hangover.
You know you’re an adult when you spend money that you used to spend on alcohol and marijuana, on decor pieces and cushions and linen and when you Google things like ‘how to build your own bookshelves’ instead of ‘how to make your own bong at home using an empty coke bottle and a hosepipe and nail scissors’.
Yup, I am an adult. Officially. The Boyfriend and I are embarking on some home DIY shiz this weekend. After living in this house for 2 years, we’ve finally decided we’re going to do something to make it ours. We’ve decided to move the lounge upstairs. We have a huge loft space upstairs, which is currently used only as my office. My desk and chair and two MacBooks and one PC and various printers, cables and gadgets from work only take up like a quarter of the space.
So we’re going to start with a loft makeover. We’re going to move our two huge couches and our TV stand and our new TV (when it arrives) upstairs and share the space as my office and a TV room. Downstairs will become a playroom for The Kid. And we’ll probably leave the old TV downstairs and mvoe the sleeper couch downstairs too – so The Kid can watch C-Beebies if he wants to, if there’s no one upstairs.
It also makes more sense to use upstairs as a lounge, because the loft opens up onto a huge balcony that never currently gets used. There’s a nice table out there, and a braai – but we hardly ever use it, we’re always downstairs in the lounge, or downstairs in the garden outside. The upstairs space is totally wasted.
So. The Boyfriend is apparently building me a new desk. Yes Mom, it means you can have your desk back.
I have a desk like this, right now: (this is not my *actual* desk – mine is waaaay messier)
But now I’m thinking I want something like this: An L-shaped corner desk would be exactly what I needed.
And I’d love to do something like this, with the desk The Boyfriend makes me:
And I absolutely adore this colour for the walls: I think it would be perfect. We have huge over-stuffed cappucino-brown sofas, and I think that this shade of turqoisey-blue would be a perfect complementary colour.
I want shelfspace like this:
And I love the idea of this: (picture it with that blue colour above)
And I love these cushions:
They’re from Skinny LaMinx:
I kinda like the idea of curtains like these: (only in different colours/patterns)
So we’re off inspiration-shopping this weekend. And hopefully getting started as well. Wish us luck and hold thumbs it doesn’t end in bloodshed!
