Sage Advice From A Two-Year-Old

“Mommy, you need to smell the flowers”.

This is good advice: Because, well. You know. You need to stop what you’re doing and appreciate the finer things in life. No matter how small they are or how small you might be. Every now and again, just so you keep the bigger picture in mind, you need to be reminded of what’s important.

“Mommy, you need to shoot the flowers.”

This is good advice: because sometimes, yes, sometimes. We need to be reminded not to take ourselves too seriously. Not to take life too seriously. Not to take the finer things in life and the bigger picture, too seriously.

“Mommy, you need to laugh.”

This is good advice: Probably the best I’ve ever received from my two year old son. And probably the thing I love most about being a mom. The re-discovery of the ability to laugh. The re-discovery of a sense of humour that’s new, naive and pure. And the satisfaction that comes from nuturing that sense of humour and being reminded that laughter is how we endure. Laughter is what gets us through, when we should be breathless with anxiety.

And that’s when you realise what it’s about.

Laughing in the face of the bigger picture.

Isn’t it?

We did see life like 2 year olds. Then reality kicked in and we became the asshat adults we are today through sheer fucking necessity.

There is no hope. Why even have kids when they just become us, only one generation more fucked up?

  15. Wenchy says:

For some reason this reminded me of when Liam was about The Kid’s age… he took his plastic sword and KILLED the flowers…. told me they were evil looking.
