On A Boy And Six Birthdays

hulkbirthdayIt’s hard to express the mixed emotions that come, as a parent, when your child has another birthday. There’s nothing quite like that lump you get in your throat as everyone is gathered around the cake with its flaming candles, singing ‘happy birthday’. That lump that’s there because you want to happycry.

Six birthdays. Six occasions on which I’ve had a quiet bawl by myself. Most recently in the traffic on the way to work. The first birthday? Relief that we’d made it through one whole year without breaking the baby. A birthday or two later, because there was hardly any baby left. Now? There’s definitely no baby left. He’s all boy and he’s big.

This year he wanted a Hulk-themed birthday. Being that it’s impossible to find Hulk party supplies that don’t have the rest of the Avengers as well, I turned to Pinterest and Google Images. I cut out one billion million Hulks. I made banners and bunting and party packs and cut out masks and and and…..!

The cake was made by The Cupcake Lady and it was pure vanilla deliciousness. Seriously. That lady knows how to make a moist, fluffy cake. The Kid was thrilled with how it looked, I was thrilled with how it tasted.

I spent two whole days making this:

It was exhausting. Everyone in the family pulled together and made something or baked something or bought a million sweets/treats. This Kid is very blessed and so lucky to have so many people that love him – a lot of effort went into making his day awesome.

And it was. There was a waterslide, playground and jumping castle. Cake and ice cream cake. Sweets, chips, drinks, hotdogs and wors rolls. Even a cocktail station for the adults. (Seriously, if you haven’t tried Original Iced cocktails yet*, you’re missing out!)

He got everything he could possibly have hoped for.

A massive jungle gym in the garden. Skylanders for PS3 (the game and a bajillion figurines), a Red Hulk, a Green Hulk. A Max Steele sword. And I can’t even remember what else. Utterly spoiled? Yes. Yes he was.

But he’s had a hard year – so much change – new school, new house, new brother – and he’s learned so much, grown up so much and had so much to deal with, that he completely deserved every little indulgence.

That being said. It’s going to be really hard to top this birthday, next year!

  1. Happy happy Bday to you all. Looks like he has a great time. And the wonderful thing is, you do not have to top this ever, because next year he would have grown more, and want something else.
